The virtual lecture and panel discussion marked Human Rights Day 2020, and the 72nd anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights.
The inaugural event was hosted by the United Nations in Jamaica and the European Union, with support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, under the theme ‘Recover Better: Stand Up for Human Rights’. Opposition Senator Dr. Honourable Floyd Morris delivered the keynote address.
Dr. Morris, who is also a member of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, was joined by other prominent government, private sector, and civil society partners. These include Ambassador Marianne Van Steen, Delegation of the European Union to Jamaica; George Abu Al-Zulof, Senior Human Rights Advisor to the United Nations Country Team; Senator Honourable Kamina Johnson-Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade; and Cliff Hughes, emmy award-winning journalist and moderator of the event. The panellists discussed the importance of human rights in relation to the Global Sustainable Development Goals. They also highlighted the challenges and opportunities that need to be addressed, and the progress made in protecting Human Rights in Jamaica.
This lecture was a part of the Spotlight initiative, a multi-year partnership between the United Nations and the European Union to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls.
