The Institute for Gender and Development Studies (IGDS) and the United Nations Present: Research for ALL Women and Girls in Jamaica Celebrating International Women's Day 2025

The Institute for Gender and Development Studies (IGDS) at the University of the West Indies, Mona, will host the ‘Research for ALL Women and Girls in Jamaica’ symposium. 

The initiative is being hosted with the partnership of UN Women and the United Nations Country Team in Jamaica.

This symposium celebrates International Women’s Day 2025 and is in keeping with The UWI’s Research Day 2025 theme:“The UWI Mona: Driving Jamaican, Caribbean and Global Development.” 

The symposium, which takes place on Thursday, 13 March 2025, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, aims to facilitate impactful conversations on women’s empowerment and highlight vital research on women and girls in Jamaica. Under the global theme, “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment,” the symposium will provide a platform for key research entities to showcase recent findings on women and girls.

The symposium’s objectives are:

  1. To celebrate International Women’s Day by advancing critical conversations on women’s empowerment.
  2. To provide a platform for CSOs, NGOs and research entities to present the latest studies and findings on women and girls in Jamaica
  3. To expose the university community to invaluable resources on women’s empowerment, offering tangible tools to further empower young women and girls

Program Outline: The event will consist of four key segments:

1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Booth holders will showcase various knowledge products, research, and resources on issues impacting women and girls in Jamaica.

1:30 pm- 2:30 pm

Panel discussion - “The State of Research on Women and Girls in Jamaica Mapping Progress, Addressing Gaps.” 

This discussion will feature presenters from The UWI and UN Women in a discussion of current trends in researching women and girls

2:30-3:00 pm

Media Tour

Booth holders and United Nations Resident Coordinator in Jamaica, Mr. Dennis Zulu

3:00-4:00 pm 

Graduate Student Conversation on approaches to research on women by women.
