United Nations Recommits to Supporting Jamaica’s Progress on Vision 2030, the Sustainable Development Goals and Beyond

24 October 2024

Today, the United Nations marks its 79th anniversary, celebrating decades of international cooperation and reaffirming its commitment to peace and sustainable development. This year’s UN Day highlights the crucial partnership between the UN and Jamaica in tackling complex global challenges and advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In Jamaica, the urgency of sustainable development is more pronounced, given the country’s status as a Small Island Developing State (SIDS). Facing the real impacts of climate change—including rising sea levels, intense hurricanes, and unpredictable weather patterns—Jamaica’s communities, livelihoods, and environment remain vulnerable. The UN is dedicated to building resilience through partnerships with the Government, private sector, academia and civil society to implement sustainable solutions that protect the people, biodiversity, and future of Jamaica.

"For 79 years, the UN has worked to represent our highest collective ideals and has brought nations together to tackle the most complex challenges of our time," said UN Resident Coordinator, Mr. Dennis Zulu. "These challenges—whether it’s climate change, conflict, inequality, or economic instability—have no borders. They affect us all. And right here in Jamaica, we feel the urgency and impact of these global issues."

With just six years left in the Decade of Action, accelerating progress on the SDGs is critical. The UN is collaborating with the Government of Jamaica and various stakeholders to ensure that these goals, from reducing poverty and improving healthcare to ensuring access to quality education, become a reality for all Jamaicans.

The recently published United Nations Jamaica Annual Results Report 2023 provides an update on Jamaica's SDG progress. While challenges exist, Jamaica is on track to meet SDG 5 on gender equality and is making good progress on Climate Action (SDG 13), Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure (SDG 9), and Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17). However, SDGs such as SDG 12 (Responsible consumption and production), and 14 (Life below water) require improvement.

On the part of Vision 2030, the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ) reported that the country is on track for over 60% of its Vision 2030 indicators. While challenges persist, particularly in food and energy insecurity, the UN remains committed to ensuring that no one is left behind on the path to a resilient and sustainable future.

"A number of SDG targets have plateaued or are not moving fast enough," said Mr. Zulu. "Nonetheless, the UN is committed to supporting Jamaica in meeting its development priorities not only for the 2030 Agenda but beyond. This year, we are investing over $3 million USD into digital transformation to advance SDG 4 – quality education."

Crucial to the development mission is the active engagement of Jamaica’s youth. As drivers of change in areas such as climate advocacy, entrepreneurship, and digital innovation, young people are playing a pivotal role in shaping Jamaica’s future. The UN continues to amplify youth empowerment through education, skills training, and opportunities for meaningful participation.

"Young people are at the forefront of driving change," emphasized Mr. Zulu. "This is why the UN is proud to be launching its first Youth Advisory Group for Jamaica this year as part of your new Youth Engagement Action Plan — we are proud to be partnering with the youth as they shape the Jamaica and World they want."

The UN recognizes the increasing challenges that require urgent attention, including conflict, disasters, and food insecurity, which can hinder progress towards sustainable development. The UN stands with Jamaica in strengthening its ability to prepare for these global shocks, respond to disasters, and build back better from crises.

UN Day serves as a reminder of the strength of partnerships and the importance of collective action. The UN remains committed to supporting Jamaica in achieving its national development priorities, advancing the SDGs, and creating a more resilient, inclusive, and prosperous future for all Jamaicans – not just for this 2030 development milestone but beyond.
