24 April 2026
According to national estimates from the Post-Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA) compiled by the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ), these events resulted in cumulative economic losses exceeding JMD 136 billion (PIOJ, 2024). In recent years, Jamaica has experienced
back-to-back hurricanes - Beryl in 2024 and, most recently, Melissa in 2025, which intensified to Category 5 strength, the strongest
on record for Jamaica in the region, resulting in estimated physical damage of USD 8.8 billion (World Bank, 2025).
