Jamaican Economy Panel Discusses Unlocking Jamaica’s Creative Economy
Jamaica’s creative economy, anchored in music, film, fashion, visual art, and the wider cultural sector, has emerged as a major driver of economic transformation. In 2022 alone, the creative sector generated approximately US$2.2 billion, contributing over 5% to national GDP and supporting 3% of employment—alongside other key sectors such as tourism, which contributed 3.9% to GDP, agriculture at 8.2%, and construction at 3.5%. Government strategies such as Vision 2030 and the pending Creative Economy Act reflect growing policy emphasis on leveraging the creative industries for sustainable development, economic diversification, and youth employment. However, the sector still contends with infrastructure gaps, IP rights challenges, and underinvestment. This discussion highlights expert perspectives on how the creative economy can be a catalyst for Jamaica’s socio-economic advancement, while aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
